Movement Disorders and Parkinson’s Disease

What are Movement Disorders and Parkinson’s disease?

Patients with movement disorders may have abnormal involuntary movements, such as a tremor or specific involuntary muscle spasms called dystonia. Parkinson’s disease is a specific type of movement disorder (with slowness, stiffness, and tremor) which requires specialist assessment and management.

What does our service offer?

We offer assessment for the diagnosis and management of patients with younger onset and complex Parkinson’s disease, atypical Parkinsonian disorders including multi-system atrophy, progressive supranuclear palsy and corticobasal degeneration. Other movement disorders such as dystonia and neuro-genetic conditions may also be assessed at the Neurology Movement Disorders service.  We work with other services in Glasgow and Clyde such as Medicine for the Elderly to help optimise care of patients.

We also provide the National Deep Brain Stimulation Service for Scotland along with the neurosurgery service.
