Headache

 What are headaches?

Headache is the most common neurological symptom with which patients attend their general practitioners or the neurology service.

Migraine is the commonest cause for recurring disabling headaches and affects around 600,000 people in Scotland. Approximately 2% of people with migraines have chronic migraine which can be difficult to manage. Headaches related to overuse of painkiller medication (medication overuse headaches) often contribute to the development of chronic headache.

Establishing the correct diagnosis ensures optimal treatment.

What does our service offer?

The headache team provide a diagnostic service and offer treatment recommendations for headache sufferers.

We offer advice on the management of episodic migraine that has not responded to standard treatments instituted by general practitioners.  We also provide a number of inpatient and outpatient treatments for chronic headaches (including chronic migraine) as well as for other headache disorders such as neuralgias and cluster headaches. Treatments offered when clinically indicated in specific conditions, include Botox and Greater Occipital Nerve injections, CGRP monoclonal antibodies (mAbs) and a range of other medications.
